Language proficiency levels
Learn more about English language proficiency levels for children. They differ from adults and rank as follows:
Starters
The Starters Level is for children, who will open a textbook in English for the first time. In this training course we lay the basics of the language, children learn the alphabet and we start working on the four main components – listening, reading, writing and speaking. Our activities are tailored to the children’s age characteristics and we have included many and varied activities to make the lessons funny, useful and entertaining.
What are our goals at the Starters level?
Reading and Writing:
– reading short sentences, recognizing words and understanding the meaning;
– reading sentences describing pictures and discovering the searched one;
– reading a text and understanding the meaning;
– reading questions about a story in pictures and responding with short answers;
– writing words and sentences;
– writing brief answers to the questions asked.
Listening:
– listening with understanding of instructions;
– listening with understanding of explanations, about pictures and proper positioning of objects, knowing the prepositions for a place;
– listening and recognizing the numbers;
– listening with understanding of words, colors, and prepositions, following instructions, locating objects and using the main colors (white, yellow, orange, red, pink, blue, green, brown, purple, black).
Speaking:
– presentation – introducing themselves, how old they are, what they like;
– understanding a question and giving a short answer;
– understanding and following instructions, pointing to the correct parts of a picture being viewed, arranging picture cards in sequential order.
Movers
Starters and Movers correspond to A1 level of the Common European Language Framework. The Movers course is the second child level. In it, we emphasize the development of the four components – speaking, reading with comprehension, writing and listening. We enter the grammar of the English language more seriously, stimulate speaking, enrich the vocabulary, keep an eye on the correct pronunciation.
What are our goals at the Movers level?
Our work on developing reading and writing skills involves:
– reading short descriptions of things and writing a word that corresponds to the description;
– reading questions about a story in pictures and responding with short answers;
– reading a short dialogue and choosing the correct answer from the set options;
– reading specific information about understanding the essence and filling in missing words in it;
– reading a short story and completing sentences;
– self-reading of Movers level children’s literature.
At the Movers level, we develop the following skills in the listening component:
– listening for differentiating names and descriptions;
– listening to names being spelled ;
– listening for understanding specific information (min. time);
– listening to instructions for performing tasks such as painting, coloring in defined colors, etc.
In the Speaking component we work on developing skills to succeed at:
– describing pictures with short sentences;
– detecting differences in them;
– listening with understanding the beginning of the story and continuing the narrative on given pictures;
– describing differences and highlighting reasons;
– answering questions about personal information.
Flyers
The highest child level is Flyers. It is a language equivalent of KET (Key English test) and corresponds to the level A2 of the Common European Language Framework. Children at this level demonstrate calmness and freedom in conducting a conversation, reading children’s books in English.
What are our goals at the Flyers level?
Our work on developing reading and writing skills involves:
– reading short descriptions of things and writing the word corresponding to the description;
– reading questions about story in pictures and responding with short answers;
– reading and completing a lengthy dialogue;
– reading specific information about understanding the essence and filling in missing words in it;
– reading a short narrative by filling in sentences to it;
– reading with understanding of factual text;
– reading with a comprehension of short text (diary or a letter page).
At Flyers level, we develop the following skills in the listening component:
– listening for differentiating names and descriptions;
– listening to names being spelled;
– listening for recognition of specific information and words;
– listening to specific information of any kind;
– listening to recognize specific information,words and colors.
In the Speaking component we work on developing skills to succeed at:
– listening for differentiating names and descriptions;
– listening to names being spelled;
